Building A Cosworth Powered Kit Car

Rear Upright ModificationWhen I offered the driveshafts up to the rear upright to ensure everything fit. It was apparent that the 108mm Cosworth Lobro Joint was significantly larger than the box section structure of the upright. The only way around this was to modify the rear upright to fit the Lobro Joint. Richard Sticklands uncle owned a machine shop and kindly offered to machine the uprights to accommodate the Lobro Joint....for a cost of course. A week later the uprights were ready. The issue I had now was I reckoned the upright had been weakened by the machining and required plates to be added to ensure the strength is regained. Luckily I was in the middle of my welding course so was able to take it along with me and get it done as part of the course. Four plates were formed out of mind steel and rolled into a C shape then 4 more D shape plates were made which were welded into the C shaped plate. The combined C and D shaped assembly is then welded into the machined upright. As the rear upright now required powder coating again. I decided to weld nuts to the inside face of the uprights so the fitting of the bearing carrier was made simpler.
