SVA
First attempt at getting to
the SVA was a complete cock up. My SVA was at Norwich. It was Thursday 23rd May
2002, I had to drive 70 miles from Cambridge to Norwich. Car ran fine until
about a mile before the SVA centre and then the engine died. My brand new KMI
Uprated fuel pump had decided that was it. I managed to rearrage SVA for the
following Monday 27th May 2002 which was only 4 days away, No extra cost was
required which made me happy. The Fuel pump has to be made to Order and a quick
call the KMI and I manage to get another one made under warranty which I picked
up from their Fulham premises on the Friday afternoon. It was fitted at the
weekend and I was ready again for SVA.
The Second attempt of getting there, First SVA test though. Got there for
8:15am. It was raining so I got to test the hood and was quite impressed how
well it worked. The car went through through he test with very few issues. The
standard stuff, Oh that edge looks a bit sharp. Stick some foam on it. My speedo
was reading 1% too slow so I had to readjust it. As it was a Greengauges
electronic item. This involved fiddling with the DIP switches. I assumed this
may be the case so did not secure the speedo in place. The only issue I did not
foresee was the outside edge of the the indicators have to be within 400mm of
the outside of the car. I measured this at home to the Outside of the front
wheel and set my wheel offset to meet this exactly. Unfortunately the tester
deemed the rear of the car was 20mm further out than the front. I managed to
bodge together a makeshift indicator setup which spaced it out by 15mm but I
could not get it any further out without a major altration. The indicators were
held in place by 1 thread as it was. He did not recheck them straight away after
the break and drove the car around the centre for a bit. I had visions of the
car coming back with 2 indicators dangling on the wires.
When he did check them he let me off the 5mm per side. I of course put them back
how I intended them straight afterwards. For a car which had had so much
development, I was extremely impressed to have passed first time. The Examiner
proclaimed it was one of the best built kits he had tested in a while.
